Australia needs more immigrants for a younger and more fertile nation

The need for having more immigrants in Australia seems to have been put on a back burner amidst all the chaos for norms of foreign religions.

First of all, it is economic expediency. Immigrants are needed in Australia as the natives can’t replace themselves. No industrial nation, irrespective of its level of advancement can afford not to have a younger population that replaces the aging.

The accepted and appropriate shape of a nation’s demography is an inverted triangle that has lesser aged people at the base and increased number of youth and children at the top. This has to be sustained for several generations as only then Australia can support the frail and aged population who cannot work, quotes The Australian.

As the top becomes narrower, it becomes increasingly difficult to sustain the increasing number of people at the base. This is more so applicable to Australia owing to the increasing age of death. This also imposes much taxation burden for the families at the middle, who have to cater to the children as well.

The demography of Australia has remained unchanged for the last one generation. The overall rate of fertility is marginally above all time lowest level in 2001 with 1.74. This was a reflection of the huge decrease in the earlier thirty years when expecting parents decided to have lesser children.

This trend has been passed on to the next generation as well with mothers aging and increased number of people remaining childless. A marriage which remains the most accepted mode of an average man having children has been in the downturn and the average age of having the first child is more than 30 years of age. This also means lesser number of births per woman in the long-term.

It is inconsequential whether this phenomenon is a good or bad one at the individual level.  At the national level, this is not at all a good thing as the average fertility rate stands at mere 1.88. Quite interestingly the birth rates were at its highest since the mid-1970s in the period of Howard as the Prime Minister with 2.02 babies per woman.

Ever since that exception, the national average birth rate has once again gone down below the levels of replacement. Therefore more immigrants are needed in Australia.

Australia’s young immigrants rejoice diversity through art on Harmony Day

Photo: Wolter Peeters

Being a part of a circus is tougher than it actually appears to be. Mario Kharat an immigrant in Australia from Lebanon practiced acrobatics, juggling, riding unicycle and tightrope walking for seven hours a day. He also demonstrates tossing of three oranges in the air freely for a photographer from Fairfax Media, keeping his head firm even while there were lights flashing around him.

He already appears to be a skilled in acrobatics at just the age of seventeen. Kharat was just thirteen when his family immigrated to Lebanon from Syria, ravaged by war. But life in Beirut was not free of hurdles. He had to give up school early as he was harassed for being a refugee from Syria. He began working as a marketing worker and adopted Lebanese accent to conceal his identity.

Kharat said that his parents were not approving of his vocation as a fireworks acrobat and were of the opinion that it was not good for his future. But he is with the view that circus was the thing he was born for and he feels better in the circus.

The Harmony project in Australia aims at promoting a sense of belongingness among the immigrants, quotes SMH.

Kharat’s life took a turn when he immigrated to Australia along with his family. This interesting journey of a circus performer from Syria to Australia is one among the diverse stories that will be showcased at the Harmony art Collective exhibition launching from March 14.  Large-scale artworks of more than 300 immigrants in the age of 24-15 will be featured at the outdoor exhibition at the Darling quarter in CBD.

This exhibition is collaboration between the Department of Social Services and amBUSH Gallery, SBS to commemorate the cultural diversity in Australia through Harmony day on March 21, 2017.

Curator Bill Dimas of the amBUSH Gallery says that a lot of people are wary of immigration but this exhibition is an attempt to inspire empathy towards the newly arrived to Australia. It will enable the people to understand the background of these young immigrants, added Dimas.

Immigration department of Australia moves ahead with digital transformation

The Australian Immigration department is moving ahead with its wide-ranging technology-driven transformations that are changing the traveling experience of the travelers amidst other agencies struggling to adopt the changes of innovative technology.

Though the travelers commuting through the airports in Australia might not notice the transformation, the head of the technology in immigration department has said that the efforts to transform business are being coupled with adopting digital programs. It is implementing innovative technology even while other government agencies are struggling with IT related issues.

Chief Information Officer of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection Randall Brugeaud was reported as saying that the agency leaders are increasing their efforts to accentuate the technology innovations. He added that the innovations of technology are required to be motivated by the executive actions to succeed.

With a growing annual business of 4-6%, the immigration department is launching automation at customs doing away with staff. More than 80% of the travelers in the Christmas season were processed with the aid of automation, devoid of any human interaction.

Mr. Brugeaud further elaborated that the immigration department would become virtually invisible in some cases to travelers and corporate not breaching the law.

Immigration is leaping ahead to the next levels of innovation in digital technology that involves the transformation of infrastructure as also building the web-site.

Centrelink is in a mess owing to the robot-debt, which is an automated system to collate information possessed by the Taxation Office of Australia and Immigration department in estimating overpayments.

ATO is also scrambled in desperate efforts to save the tax return initiative from being affected by the disastrous online crash prior to Christmas and has given up most of its IT initiatives for this year.
The sweeping technological innovations adopted by immigration department brought about changes in work culture though all of the staff failed to adapt to the changes.

It is a true challenge for people to adapt to cultural changes, said Mr. Brugeaud. Employees who had been all the while accustomed to carrying single function might have been demanded to become multi-discipline functional. He added that it was a tough challenge to deal with and was not possible for everyone to do so.

Increased numbers of nurses from the Philippines are needed in Australia

Australia is witnessing a huge demand for personal care workers and allied healthcare professionals and more nurses from the Philippines are being encouraged to take up a job in the nation.

A Registered migration agent in Australia, Vikram Sharma has said that the major issue faced by Australia in the recent years is that most of its professionals are retiring of late. He added that Australia is in need of more and more professionals in the healthcare sector to cater to the requirements of the population that are aging. Vikram was speaking at Cebu city’s Nursing Career Expo in Australia that was attended by more than 200 nurses.

The Federal Employment Department of Australia has projected that the nation will be in need of around 800,000 healthcare and social assistance professionals by 2025, quotes CEBU Daily News.
Meanwhile, the statistics from Labor and Employment department shows that every year there are 200,000 nurses graduating in the Philippines while only 2,500 nursing jobs were available for them in that nation.

As a result, the remaining nurses are left with no option but to immigrate overseas or remain in the Philippines and be employed in unrelated sectors amidst wait for a vacancy.

Sharma said that the Lawson College, of which he was also the President aimed to impart training to the nurses to equip them with skills that would qualify them to obtain a permanent residency in Australia. This would also make them qualified to be employed any part of the world.

The healthcare training program offered by Lawson College includes courses in business as well. The reason is that employers in Australia give more importance to nurses with management skills that are required in the competitive workplaces, said Sharma.

The nurses from the Philippines prefer to immigrate to Australia owing to the geographical proximity and climatic compatibility.

The qualifications of nurses from the Philippines are recognized in Australia too and the additional requirement is that they need to appear for a registration exam. Owing to the larger economy of Australia the pay package is also higher while compared to other nations, added Sharma.

The immigration system of Australia is praised as worth emulating by Donald Trump

The immigration system of Australia that is based on merit has been praised by the US President Donald Trump. He expressed this view in his speech to the US Congress and advocated the implementation of the same immigration system in the US too, as quoted by the 9 News.

Trump further explained that positive and real reform to the immigration system was achievable. The focus of these reforms has to be strengthening the security of the nation, restoring respect for laws and betterment of salaries and job prospects for the US nationals. This was the first address of the US present for the US Congress’ joint session.

Donald Trump also added that the existing US immigration system based on low-skilled immigration was unsuccessful in protecting the native workers and he gave the examples of immigration system of Australia and Canada in this regard.

He elaborated on this immigration system and said that it was based on the fundamental principle that immigrants seeking entry to the nation must be able to financially support themselves. Trump explained that the US does not follow this principle whish results in straining the resources of the government.

Trump advocated a merit-based immigration regime as that would increase salaries, save resources and assist several struggling families including that of immigrants in raising the standard of living.
