Australia’s young immigrants rejoice diversity through art on Harmony Day

Photo: Wolter Peeters

Being a part of a circus is tougher than it actually appears to be. Mario Kharat an immigrant in Australia from Lebanon practiced acrobatics, juggling, riding unicycle and tightrope walking for seven hours a day. He also demonstrates tossing of three oranges in the air freely for a photographer from Fairfax Media, keeping his head firm even while there were lights flashing around him.

He already appears to be a skilled in acrobatics at just the age of seventeen. Kharat was just thirteen when his family immigrated to Lebanon from Syria, ravaged by war. But life in Beirut was not free of hurdles. He had to give up school early as he was harassed for being a refugee from Syria. He began working as a marketing worker and adopted Lebanese accent to conceal his identity.

Kharat said that his parents were not approving of his vocation as a fireworks acrobat and were of the opinion that it was not good for his future. But he is with the view that circus was the thing he was born for and he feels better in the circus.

The Harmony project in Australia aims at promoting a sense of belongingness among the immigrants, quotes SMH.

Kharat’s life took a turn when he immigrated to Australia along with his family. This interesting journey of a circus performer from Syria to Australia is one among the diverse stories that will be showcased at the Harmony art Collective exhibition launching from March 14.  Large-scale artworks of more than 300 immigrants in the age of 24-15 will be featured at the outdoor exhibition at the Darling quarter in CBD.

This exhibition is collaboration between the Department of Social Services and amBUSH Gallery, SBS to commemorate the cultural diversity in Australia through Harmony day on March 21, 2017.

Curator Bill Dimas of the amBUSH Gallery says that a lot of people are wary of immigration but this exhibition is an attempt to inspire empathy towards the newly arrived to Australia. It will enable the people to understand the background of these young immigrants, added Dimas.

Immigration department of Australia moves ahead with digital transformation

The Australian Immigration department is moving ahead with its wide-ranging technology-driven transformations that are changing the traveling experience of the travelers amidst other agencies struggling to adopt the changes of innovative technology.

Though the travelers commuting through the airports in Australia might not notice the transformation, the head of the technology in immigration department has said that the efforts to transform business are being coupled with adopting digital programs. It is implementing innovative technology even while other government agencies are struggling with IT related issues.

Chief Information Officer of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection Randall Brugeaud was reported as saying that the agency leaders are increasing their efforts to accentuate the technology innovations. He added that the innovations of technology are required to be motivated by the executive actions to succeed.

With a growing annual business of 4-6%, the immigration department is launching automation at customs doing away with staff. More than 80% of the travelers in the Christmas season were processed with the aid of automation, devoid of any human interaction.

Mr. Brugeaud further elaborated that the immigration department would become virtually invisible in some cases to travelers and corporate not breaching the law.

Immigration is leaping ahead to the next levels of innovation in digital technology that involves the transformation of infrastructure as also building the web-site.

Centrelink is in a mess owing to the robot-debt, which is an automated system to collate information possessed by the Taxation Office of Australia and Immigration department in estimating overpayments.

ATO is also scrambled in desperate efforts to save the tax return initiative from being affected by the disastrous online crash prior to Christmas and has given up most of its IT initiatives for this year.
The sweeping technological innovations adopted by immigration department brought about changes in work culture though all of the staff failed to adapt to the changes.

It is a true challenge for people to adapt to cultural changes, said Mr. Brugeaud. Employees who had been all the while accustomed to carrying single function might have been demanded to become multi-discipline functional. He added that it was a tough challenge to deal with and was not possible for everyone to do so.

Increased numbers of nurses from the Philippines are needed in Australia

Australia is witnessing a huge demand for personal care workers and allied healthcare professionals and more nurses from the Philippines are being encouraged to take up a job in the nation.

A Registered migration agent in Australia, Vikram Sharma has said that the major issue faced by Australia in the recent years is that most of its professionals are retiring of late. He added that Australia is in need of more and more professionals in the healthcare sector to cater to the requirements of the population that are aging. Vikram was speaking at Cebu city’s Nursing Career Expo in Australia that was attended by more than 200 nurses.

The Federal Employment Department of Australia has projected that the nation will be in need of around 800,000 healthcare and social assistance professionals by 2025, quotes CEBU Daily News.
Meanwhile, the statistics from Labor and Employment department shows that every year there are 200,000 nurses graduating in the Philippines while only 2,500 nursing jobs were available for them in that nation.

As a result, the remaining nurses are left with no option but to immigrate overseas or remain in the Philippines and be employed in unrelated sectors amidst wait for a vacancy.

Sharma said that the Lawson College, of which he was also the President aimed to impart training to the nurses to equip them with skills that would qualify them to obtain a permanent residency in Australia. This would also make them qualified to be employed any part of the world.

The healthcare training program offered by Lawson College includes courses in business as well. The reason is that employers in Australia give more importance to nurses with management skills that are required in the competitive workplaces, said Sharma.

The nurses from the Philippines prefer to immigrate to Australia owing to the geographical proximity and climatic compatibility.

The qualifications of nurses from the Philippines are recognized in Australia too and the additional requirement is that they need to appear for a registration exam. Owing to the larger economy of Australia the pay package is also higher while compared to other nations, added Sharma.

The immigration system of Australia is praised as worth emulating by Donald Trump

The immigration system of Australia that is based on merit has been praised by the US President Donald Trump. He expressed this view in his speech to the US Congress and advocated the implementation of the same immigration system in the US too, as quoted by the 9 News.

Trump further explained that positive and real reform to the immigration system was achievable. The focus of these reforms has to be strengthening the security of the nation, restoring respect for laws and betterment of salaries and job prospects for the US nationals. This was the first address of the US present for the US Congress’ joint session.

Donald Trump also added that the existing US immigration system based on low-skilled immigration was unsuccessful in protecting the native workers and he gave the examples of immigration system of Australia and Canada in this regard.

He elaborated on this immigration system and said that it was based on the fundamental principle that immigrants seeking entry to the nation must be able to financially support themselves. Trump explained that the US does not follow this principle whish results in straining the resources of the government.

Trump advocated a merit-based immigration regime as that would increase salaries, save resources and assist several struggling families including that of immigrants in raising the standard of living.

Australia has emerged as the favored destination for global millionaire investors for the second consecutive year surpassing conventional destinations such as the UK or the US.

3.    Canada with 8,000 immigrant millionaires
4.    UAE with 5,000 immigrant millionaires
5.    New Zealand with 4,000 immigrant millionaires

The report from the New World Wealth says that there are diverse reasons for Australia emerging as the popular and chosen destination for immigrant millionaires across the world.

One of the best healthcare systems in the world is present in Australia. On the other hand, the NHS in the UK is worsening and the mandatory insurance for healthcare in the US has not turned out to be appropriate for the middle class and affluent patients.

The location of Australia also makes it an excellent base destination for business ventures in the emerging nations of Asia such as India, China, Vietnam, Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong. Workabroad Australia is also preferred by immigrants across the world.

Australia is also relatively devoid of the Middle East crisis and the associated crisis of refugees in Europe. New World Wealth has also rated Australia as the safest nation in the world. It is specifically safe for the upbringing of children.

Australia is also a good destination for affluent and retired yacht proprietors who intend to sail across the islands in South Pacific. Inheritance taxes in Australia are lower than that of the US and in fact much lower than that of the UK.

It has also been reported by New World Wealth that the excellent economic growth of Australia in the last ten years has definitely impacted the business prospects and self-assurance.

In the last decade, Australia’s total wealth has witnessed an increase of 85% while compared to the US’s growth of 30% and the UK’s growth of 28%.

New World Wealth also reveals in its report that the average Australian citizen is crucially more affluent than the average citizen of the UK or the US, something that was not true last ten years ago. The climate of Australia is also one of the key factors for facilitating it to emerge as the preferred investor destination as its climate is very hot when compared specifically with the UK.

Understanding the Australian immigration policy and how the UK can adopt it after exiting from the EU

A slogan that highlights the immigration policy of Australia is that the Australians decide who arrives at their nation as well as the circumstances in which they arrive.

Perhaps this is what the Prime Minister of the UK Theresa May and its Home secretary Amber Rudd will have in their mind while shaping the immigration policy of the UK after exit from the European Union.

Here is a brief synopsis of the immigration policy and its execution in Australia. The government of Australia sets an target for receiving immigrants every year and for 2017 it is around 200, 000. This total target is then divided into two three categories. The number of refugees is first settled upon.

All refugees who arrive in Australia are very well scrutinized so as to ensure that any individuals who might be a concern to the security authorities or crime convicts are even accidentally permitted to enter the nation.

A percentage of the overseas immigrants who have approved the visa to arrive in Australia are through the family scheme. The majority of them are the ones who will be marrying the Australian nationals.

A large majority of the immigrants who are authorized to arrive in Australia are in the skilled migrants’ category. The government of Australia evaluates the immigrants to determine their skills to ensure that the economy of the nation continues to flourish.

A point’s based system assesses the immigrants for their eligibility based on their qualifications, age, language, and experience. The more the immigrant applicant is qualified, higher are the points that he receives. It is mandatory that immigrants who arrive through the skilled migration scheme have knowledge of the English language, as quoted by the Express Co UK.

The skilled migration program is specifically important for Australia. Though it makes a huge investment in the education sector, Australia has a constant demand for skilled professionals in areas that have a scarcity of skilled workers. The skilled migration program is nondiscriminatory and immigrants are chosen irrespective of their religion, the nation of origin, race or gender.

Immigrants are chosen on the basis of their skills. Currently, Indians account for 22 percent of the total immigrants, Chinese for 16% and Britons for 10%. Australia’s liberal immigration program ensures that a very large percentage of its population is overseas immigrants.

Almost 24% of the Australians are those born outside the nation and around 43% of them are those whose one parent was not born in Australia. In spite of the large population of the immigrants, Australia is very stable as a nation both socially and politically.

Australia has comparatively low crime rate, a high level of social integration and Australia is ranked very high on the international index for happiness. These are broadly the features of the immigration policies of Australia that define the do's.

However there are some don’ts also that are a part of the Australian immigration policy.

Australia does not permit entry of immigrants who attempt to override the immigration laws by taking the assistance of people who assist in illegally sneaking in immigrants to the nation.

Immigrants who intend to ignore the legal framework for immigration and sneak into Australia through boats will not succeed. These immigrants will either be turned back or in case if this is not possible they will be shifted to the Nauru or Papua New Guinea’s processing centers. The overseas individuals who are not refugees are sent back to their native nations.

Though this immigration policy of Australia is tough and controversial, it is needed to ensure that the integrity of its immigration policy is maintained and does not collapse. By refusing entry of immigrants through people smugglers, Australian government ensures that it is the legal framework that governs the immigration policy. It does not approve the idea of permitting people to arrive into the nation without knowledge of their background.

A regulated immigration policy ensures that the economy flourishes. Australia has a history of the glorious economic growth of 26 years. It is in a position to curb any social problems that might arise out of immigration.  A regulated immigration policy will also be welcomed by the citizens.
